아래 문서는 2013년 ‘프리 뷰 인 서울’ (Preview in Seoul)이라는 섬유관련 국제전시회에 출품되는 쥬라실 섬유에 대한 뉴스미디어의 궁금증을 풀어주기 위하여 작성된 보도자료이다. 국제전시회 성격 상 영어와 한국어로 준비했다. Then came along synthetic textiles such as nylon and polyester, which can be manufactured at a relatively low cost and in abundance from the petroleum through automated mass-production. The appearance of the synthetic textiles could be termed as ‘democratization of textiles’. Yet the democratization was not complete mainly because the synthetic fibers lack the noble quality of the natural textiles. For instance, a synthetic jacket and a wool jacket look different, feel different, and weigh different. They belong to different leagues. 의상은 예전에는 주된 신분 상징이었던바, 모든 섬유들은 소위 천연섬유로서 누에, 목화, 양털과 같은 것들이 그 근원이었고, 수공이 많이 들고 생산량이 제한 된 것들이었다. 그러다가 나일론, 폴리에스터와 같은 합성섬유가 출현한바, 이들은 원유로부터 자동대량생산에 의하여 큰 물량으로 비교적 낮은 가격에 제조된다. 합성섬유의 출현은 ‘섬유의 민주화’로 불릴 수 있다. 그러나 그 민주화는 완전한 것이 아니었었는데 그 이유로는 합성섬유는 자연섬유의 고급스러움을 결여하고 있다. 예를 들어, 합성섬유 자켓과 울 자켓은 보기에서나 감촉에서나 무게에서 상호 다르다. 그들은 다른 리그에 속한다. The fundamental reason why a synthetic jacket and a wool jacket are so different is that the former comes from petroleum, a dead substance, while the latter comes from an entity full of life. 합성섬유 자켓과 울 자켓이 상호 다른 근본적 이유는, 전자는 죽은 물질인 원유에서 오고 후자는 생명이 가득 찬 개체에서 오기 때문이다. To be fair, the petroleum has not been dead all the time. Once upon a time, such as in the Jurassic era, its constituents were full of life: Woods, algae, sheep and goats, and all kinds of living creatures were plunged into the furnace of the earth, and then processed under extremely high-temperature, high-pressure conditions to be converted into a black and dead substance called petroleum. As such, the synthetic textiles from the dead substance could not compete against the natural textiles in some of crucial points. 공정하게 이야기하자면, 원유는 항상 죽은 상태인 것은 아니었다. 쥬라기 시대와 같은 아주 예전에는 원유의 구성체들은 나무, 수초, 양과 염소 등과 같이 생명이 가득 차있었는데, 그 생명체들은 지구의 용광로 속으로 쏟아져서 고온 고압 조건에서 원유라고 불리는 검은 색의 죽은 물질로 된 것이다. 그리하여, 죽은 물질로부터 나온 합성섬유는 자연섬유와 몇 개의 결정적인 요소에서 경쟁을 할 수 없다. The true democratization of the textiles could be realized only when the original livelihood of the petroleum’s constituents, namely, woods, algae, sheep and goats, etc. which were once full of life in the Jurassic era, are somehow revived and resurrected. And the true democratization of the textiles happened in Korea in 2013. It is a pure miracle in its true sense. 진정한 섬유의 민주화를 이루려면 나무, 해초, 양과 염소 등과 같은 원유 구성 개체들이 다시 그 쥬라기 시대에서처럼 생명력을 회복하여야만 가능하다. 그리고 그 섬유의 민주화는 2013년 대한민국에서 일어났다. 그 것은 진정한 의미의 기적이다. A research team in Korea decided to add a vegetable substance into the petroleum-based synthetic resin through a high-risk process that is to be avoided by all sane and knowledgeable textile experts. It was the last resort after a long journey of failure after failure. The factory manager vehemently objected to their instruction, claiming rightly that they were insane, as the factory would explode. After a long and bitter quarrel, the process recipe was tried out mainly because they were at the end of the rope. To their great relief, explosion did not occur. And, shockingly, the textile fiber they so got was a pure miracle. The livelihood of the Jurassic era was revived. So it was named ‘Jurasil’, a composite abbreviation for Jurassic Textile. 한국의 한 연구팀은 제정신을 가진 섬유전문가라면 피할 그러한 위험한 공정을 통하여 원유 베이스의 합성수지에 식물성분을 가미하기로 결정하였다. 실패에 실패를 거듭한 여정 끝에 마지막 시도였다. 그 공장매니저는 그들이 미쳤다고 주장하며 공장이 폭발할 것이라는 온당한 판단 하에 그 지시에 극구 반대하였다. 길고 첨예한 논쟁 끝에 그 공정 제안은 드디어 시도되었던바, 그들은 로프의 끝에 매달려 있는 실정이었다. 그들에게 큰 안도를 주며 폭발은 일어나지 않았다. 그리고 충격적으로 그들이 얻은 섬유는 정말로 기적이었다. 쥬라기 시대의 그 생명력이 복원된 것이다. 고로 쥬라실이라고 명명하였던바, 쥬라기 텍스타일의 합성 약자이다. In order to witness and verify the miracle, one does not have travel far if he happens to reside in Seoul or its vicinity. From September 4th through 6th is being held an annual textile exhibit in COEX, and one could come to Booth No. D9 and could touch and feel Jurasil samples, which include jumpers, sweaters, trousers, socks, etc. The Jurasil jumpers and sweaters can compete very comfortably against the counterparts made of Cashmere or any other textiles. And it is water-washable. It is of very low-cost compared to a Cashmere counterpart. The true democratization in the textile is complete. 그 기적을 목격하고 증명하기 위해서는, 서울이나 근교에 사는 경우 그리 먼 여행을 할 필요도 없다. 9월 4일부터 6일까지 COEX에서 연례 섬유 전시회가 열리는바, 부스 D9에 왕림하시어, 점퍼, 스웨터, 바지 등의 쥬라실 샘플들을 만져보고 느껴보면 된다. 그 쥬라실 점퍼와 스웨터는 캐쉬미어나 그 어떤 섬유로 만들어진 점퍼와 스웨터와 아주 쉽게 경쟁할 수 있다. 그리고 물세탁이다. 캐쉬미어 의류보다 훨씬 싸다. 섬유의 진정한 민주화는 완전하다. As such is the crux of the Jurasil. The rests are details, which are described in the Jurasil catalog and on the website www.jurasil.com. 쥬라실의 요점은 이상과 같다. 나머지는 종속적인 상세사항들로서, 쥬라실 카탈로그나 www.jurasil.com에 기술되어 있다. It would suffice to say that, with Jurasil, one could make the highest quality textile products such as daily costumes, sportswear, padded or sheet blanket, etc., plus industrial applications such as automobile interior and felt at a low cost. As an example of low-cost feature, dyeing is done at twice speed at a lower temperature, with amazing color penetration depth. Jurasil is a shortcoming-free textile, and even somewhat amateurish processing is largely forgiven. 요약하여 이야기하자면, 쥬라실은 낮은 경비로써 가장 높은 품질의 제품들을 만들 수 있는 바, 일상생활 의상, 스포츠 의상, 솜으로 채웠거나 홋겹의 이불/담요, 그리고 차량내부용 재료에서 부직포 등의 산업용에 이르기까지 만들 수 있다. 낮은 비용의 한 예로서, 염색은 두 배 이상 속도로, 더 낮은 온도에서 이루어지는바, 또한 염색의 심색성도 놀랍게 뛰어나다. 쥬라실은 무결점 섬유이며, 고로 다소 서투른 공정도 대부분 불량사태로 이어지지 않는다. Since Jurasil is destined to replace almost all the existing textiles, the economic impact will turn out to be beyond comprehension. Hundreds and thousands of billion-dollars are at the stake. 쥬라실은 거의 모든 섬유들을 대체할 것이므로 경제 영향은 상상을 초월할 것으로 나타날 것이다. 수백, 수천 조 달러가 연루되어 있다. ] A huge amount of research efforts should be invested into Jurasil in order to solve and understand the mystery of Jurasil. At the present time, we have a rather limited knowledge on exactly what is going on during the production process. Also, a huge amount of R&D efforts should be invested into related application areas, such as fashion design, beddings, etc. in order to exploit the advantages and merits of Jurasil, with a clear objective of reviving otherwise stalemated market conditions in the textile-related fields. Overcrowded and saturated market conditions have become the graveyard for so many small and large firms within and without Korea. Jurasil could play a constructive role in this regard. 또한 막대한 양의 연구개발 노력이 패션디자인, 침장류 등 관련 응용분야에 투자되어야 하는바, 이는 섬유관련 분야들의 침체된 현 마켓 상황들을 되살리는 데 뚜렷한 목적을 두어야 한다. 지나치게 붐비고 포화적 상태인 마켓 조건들은 국내외를 막론하고 많은 소기업 대기업들의 무덤이 되어왔다. 쥬라실은 이에서 건설적인 역할을 할 수 있을 것이다. To list some other impressive features of Jurasil, cottons made of Jurasil weighs only about half of cottons of other kinds for a same volume; Jurasil contains a vegetable substance that possesses skin-preserving and moisturizing characteristics, and is void of any harmful substances, as proven by ‘Infant Skin Contact Eco-Test’; Jurasil possesses a semi-permanent antibacterial effect as it attains the effect through a chemical reaction with a vegetable substance in the production process; Jurasil emits far-infrared radiation known to have various health benefits; Thermal Image Measurement Tests have proved that Jurasil is superior to the cotton by an amount of 2o C or more in terms of the thermal generation effect; Jurasil is superior to the polyester by an amount of 2o C or more in terms of the thermal preservation characteristics; Jurasil possesses superior anti-electrostatic characteristics; Jurasil is superior to the polyester by more than 25% in terms of the deodorization strength. So the story will go on. 쥬라실의 다른 인상 깊은 면모들을 기술하자면, 쥬라실로 만든 솜은 다른 종류의 솜에 비하여 같은 용적 당 무게가 절반 정도이다; 쥬라실은 피부보호 및 보습효과를 가지고 있으며, ‘유아 피부 접촉 테스트’에서 증명된 바와 같이 유해성분이 전혀 없다; 쥬라실은 제조공정에서 식물복합성분을 화학반응 시켜서 항균력을 얻게 되므로 그 항균력은 반영구적이다; 쥬라실은 여러 건강 효과를 가진 원적외선을 발산한다; 열화상측정테스트에 의하면, 발열효과에서 면보다 2도 이상 높다; 쥬라실은 폴리에스터보다 열 보존에서 2도 이상 높다; 쥬리실은 정전기 문제가 없다; 쥬라실은 냄새제거 능력에서 폴리에스터보다 25% 더 높다. 이야기는 이와 같이 계속된다. The health benefits of Jurasil will send ripple effects to the medical and health sectors. 쥬라실의 건강 혜택은 의료 및 건강 분야에 파급효과를 일으킬 것이다. Through the anticipated success of Jurasil, TTI will seek ways to contribute to the people’s wellbeing. In the health area, indirect transmission of contagious bacteria and exposure to toxic substances are two major concerns to the people. Jurasil possesses antibacterial ability other health benefits as listed above. Since clothes are almost a part of human body, medical and health benefits through clothes would contribute to the people’s wellbeing greatly. 쥬라실의 예상되는 성공을 통하여, TTI는 사람들의 웰빙에 기여하는 방안들을 모색할 것이다. 건강의 영역에서, 간접감염균의 전염과 독성물질에의 노출은 큰 문제들이다. 쥬라실은 상술한 바와 같이 항균성 및 여러 건강기능성들을 가지고 있다. 옷은 거의 인간의 몸의 일부와 같으므로 옷을 통한 의학적 그리고 건강 상 혜택들은 사람들의 웰빙에 크게 기여할 것이다. Jurasil is different from the existing synthetic textiles in that it does not emit toxic gases when it is burned. Today, there exist grave environmental consequences of burning textiles discarded as garbage as they emit toxic gases during the burning. As the existing textiles are replaced by Jurasil as anticipated, such a grave environmental impact would be lessened. 쥬라실은 기존 합성섬유들과 달리 소각의 경우 독성가스를 배출하지 않는다. 오늘날, 쓰레기로 버려진 섬유들을 소각할 때 유독가스들을 배출하므로 심각한 환경 상 결과를 초래한다. 기존 섬유들이 예상대로 쥬라실로 대체될 때, 이러한 심각한 환경 문제는 완화될 것이다. sheem_sk@naver.com *필자/심상근. 미 버클리대 박사. 칼럼니스트
